Darnley’s Gin Christmas Festivities

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of attending the Darnley’s Gin Christmas Table event along with some of Edinburgh’s loveliest bloggers. This was my first event that I’ve been invited to as a blogger and I was so excited to work with a brand that’s based in Scotland.

Darnley’s Gin is a family owned business based in Fife, Scotland. They have a distillery located just outside of Kingsbarns in Fife of which they host daily tours. There is even a gin school where you can spend time learning about how gin is made and then create your own! You can name it and walk away with a bottle of your own gin, distilled to your own personal tastes.

The event took place in BABA Edinburgh, part of The Principal Hotel on Charlotte Square in Edinburgh’s New Town. I’ve heard many wonderful things about the food there so I was really looking forward to tasting it for myself. It also created a lovely backdrop for the occasion with the dark walls and a fireplace which really added to the cosy, Christmassy mood.

To match the stunning interiors, there were gorgeous flower decorations by Rogue Flowers, based in Edinburgh’s West End. The table decorations had a mix of fir branches, leaves and pinecones, which I was obsessed with and dotted in amongst them were bottles of Darnley’s Gin and candles from Paper Tiger.

The food was delicious! Who would have thought that I would like cauliflower fritters? The warm naan was divine and those of you who know me will understand that bread is my absolute favourite. I had salmon and mozzarella and of course, I tried BABA’s famous Baba Ganoush. I also loved the goat nuggets, something that I had never tried before.

Of course, at an event hosted by a gin company, the cocktails were the stars of the show. I’m a cocktail noob and haven’t tried many but it’s safe to say, I have found a new love. As it was Christmas, the cocktails all used Darnley’s Spiced Gin which is so good for Christmas cocktails

  1. First was a Spiced Apricot Bellini with an edible glitter rim. How fabulous is it to have glitter in a drink?
  2. The second was Darnley’s Gin and Ginger. This was probably my favourite of them all. It had such a sweet taste to it which made it very easy for me to drink as it tasted like juice…
  3. Finally, we had a Hot Spiced Gin Punch. I’d never heard of such a thing before but I learned that it was first mentioned in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The warmth makes it the most perfect festive drink in my opinion!

Keeping in tune with the festivities, we had a present wrapping masterclass with Kiaz Trepte from Paper Tiger, an Edinburgh based business. Whenever I wrap presents, they look rather messy and untidy, no matter how hard I try to make them look good. I am hoping that after receiving tips from Kiaz, my wrapping skills will be off the charts this year.

Paper Tiger has two gift/card shops in Edinburgh with so many amazing products. I love their candles which are all named after areas in Edinburgh. Kiaz told me that they did the maths to make sure that all of the wax would melt and not leave any strange rings as the candle burned. I had no idea there were specific maths involved!

I was also very lucky to walk away with a goodie bag that was gifted to me. Inside was my own bottle of Darnley’s Gin, some gin truffles, chocolate coins and an ‘Old Town’ candle all inside a tote bag from Paper Tiger. Lime and basil is one of my favourite tastes and smells and I can’t wait to burn my candle!

I met many new people who were all so lovely and helped me feel really comfortable as I felt a little awkward attending my first event as a blogger. I had a fantastic time at the Darnley’s Gin event and really hope I can work with them again in the future. I will definitely be taking a trip to visit their distillery at some point and I can definitely think of many people who would love to come with me!
